Helium.com is a popular and good writing site available for the international writers. It is a publishing platform, where you can write articles, publish them and earn money.

Basic structure of Helium.com system

Helium.com is different from other writing sites. Basically you have to do two things in helium. They are writing and rating. In rating you choose the most valuable article in a set of two articles. However, there is an Algorithm that catch improper rating and decrease your rating score.

Articles can be written to predefined titles. Each title can have more than one article (some have hundreds of articles). Your article’s position in each title is dependent on how others rate your article against rest of the articles in a particular title. Titles with more than three articles are considered competitive titles. Your articles average positions in competitive titles are carried on as writing score. You need at least 75% writing score to get 1 -3$ upfront titles.

They have an assignment system, where the writer is given specific assignments. You can choose any one of them and write an article within the set time frame. Types of assignments available are determined by the writing groups you are in.

In addition, you can submit new titles. However, new titles should go through editors and get approved. It usually takes around 24 hours.

There are several ways you can earn money from helium.

1. Adshare: - Helium offers undisclosed share of ad revenue for the writer. But by all practical means it is much more than similar writing platforms. You can earn a decent amount of passive income through their ad share program if you have at least written 350 niche articles and you know how to promote them. In fact author of this article earns around 300$ per month for his 380 articles. However, you need to keep at least 75% rating score. In addition you need to do minimum 10 rates per months and 30 rates per 90 days to get your ad share.

In addition, helium earnings page updates in real time. Therefore you can see how your earnings increase or decrease over time. However, it does not show you detailed traffic stats. It is another wonderful feature. Most of the other revenue share sites update it once a day (e.g. Hubages ad program and factoidz).

2. Upfront or incentive payments :- Helium offers upfront or incentive (their terminology) of around 1$ - 10$ per article written to predefined title chosen by them via the assignment system.

3. Content source income : - Helium also has many partners in publishing industry and they offer sometimes around 150$ per article.

4. Stock content sales : - Sometimes outside publishers buy certain rights of your article, if it suits them. For that you can get around 5$ per article. But that is a random earning opportunity.

5. Other writers programs : - If you are a very good writer, then they will choose you for specific writing opportunities in their projects, where you can earn some good money.

6. Writing contests : This is another interesting way to earn money if you have the competitive spirit and lot of time.

Editorial oversight and guidelines

Helium.com has fairly strong editorial oversight, especially for the upfront paying titles. They do not tolerate grammar mistakes or spelling mistakes and they delete article with mistakes right away.

Your articles must adhere to the AP style and they must be magazine quality.

In addition, you need to write original articles that are never published and you grand helium.com one year exclusive rights to your article. During that one year, you should not publish that article in the internet. You cannot delete your articles written for helium.com as well.

But you can create an ebook or publish it in print medium. In addition, they have specific writing standards and you may need to read them before writing for helium.

How to earn immediately after joining the site

Once you have signed up for helium you can choose at least four or five titles that are comfortable for you. They must have at least two articles already written; therefore you can get a writing score. Then try to write your best article for each of them and try to beat other two articles.

To get a good writing score your article should have sub titles, small paragraphs, a summary and sources should be cited then there (e.g. According to the BMJ, 2011, 34, This disease…). In addition, your article should not have any grammar or spelling mistakes. Then try to rate at least ten articles according to the above guidelines you followed to write articles.

Another important thing is do not include any promotional or affiliate links in your articles. It will result it immediate deletion and closing your account. In addition, never create duplicate accounts, because you can manipulate the rating system through that.

Once you got 75% writing score for your four articles, you will get a writing star and get marketplace approved writer badge. Then your assignment system will list the articles you can write for 1 -3 $s. However, you will get the said amount once the editors chose your article from around five articles submitted to that title.

Helium.com Community

This is another plus point in helium.com. They have one of the best and helpful writing community. They help to improve your writing style. In addition, most of the members are very senior writers with lot of experience. However, some of them are quite egoistic.

Problems with the helium.com site

One of the main problems of the helium .com is its volatile nature. They change the sites requirements frequently. In addition, they also change their terms of use frequently. In addition, their management is much secretive about their plans; therefore currently many good writers are leaving helium.com.

In addition, Helium.com is also hit hard by the google panda. This causes significant traffic drop to the site.

Latest news

Most current news is that helium.com has been acquired by the RR Donnelley group. Therefore, many changes to their site are on the pipeline and nobody knows what they are. However, according to this author’s perception, it is the best earning platform for quality international writers.

Recent daily earning fluctuations in helium.com

Recently daily earnings starts to fluctuate weirdly. They were hit by a wave of artificial traffic on July 28th and many writers experienced very high earnings and immediately after that daily earnings dropped to nearly 2/3 of the usual average daily revenue. Immediate drop may be due their tweaking of the page view code to exclude suspected traffic. However, there is wide spread belief that they intend to cut revenue share for twitter and other social media traffic.

Recent changes and pay levels

Helium writers recently experienced a huge revenue share loss. It may be due to Google traffic loss or due to cut in pay rates.

Good to hear from you on Helium.I joined a year ago but just could not handle their rating system. It is a lot of work and I guess that is why they pay you!

I found Helium to be a brilliant site for writers who are starting out and who need to develop. After what used to be Open Salon, Helium is the most helpful and encouraging writer's site on the web.

During the past two years, I made excellent pay and still do pretty well. The revenue share only programs do not even offer comparable opportunity, so I will stay with Helium.

But this is a very honest and practical article, especially given the increasingly unreliable and secretive nature of Helium right now. There is a lot of concern and fretfulness as each new change results in more turmoil and less pay. In some aspects, writers who complain are being addressed in condescending and even outright insulting fashion. Helium management needs to step up on that.

Of course, most of the lost revenue is from the Google page rank debacle. As a Google fan, I hate the deterioration in search results quality.

Helium has great potential for re-stabilizing into a place for writers who love writing and for the best writers to get paid, but frankly, I am looking to put some eggs in other baskets to supplement the dropping income.

Some good points about Helium, but perhaps you should revise it to mention the downsides sooner. Post-Panda, the site seems to have some good ideas for recovery - but its biggest problem is still the fact that you can never delete your articles.

Helium says it only takes first rights, but many writers are discovering that nobody wants to buy an article that's already published on the internet - especially as Google gets better at punishing duplicate content. So writers should never write anything for Helium unless they're willing to effectively give up the rights to it.
